I haven't tried OSSEC. RAM is expensive on a VPS and many monitoring tools are memory hogs, but OSSEC's agents sound lightweight, so that's encouraging.

i did it the other way around. instead of blocking and detecting the IP one at a time. i first block ALL countries IP, then allow only my country IP, if foreign IP is required. I will then open up individually.

Yeah, it's annoying how most routers (even ones running embedded linux) force you to reboot, when they could make the changes dynamically. Glad the post helped.

Thank you for this great article. A sudden large volume of registration attempts just almost brought my poor little server down. Initially I was blocking the IP addresses on my router (Fritzbox), but because this requires a reboot after every change, your method is much more helpful - at least till I find a method to do this on the router without the need for reboots

Most of the existing tools I found were scripts that ran all the time and used a lot of memory. fail2ban is a python script, no? Since memory is expensive on an VPS, this simple shell script is a lightweight solution.

for what it's worth, fail2ban does this automatically.
